Volunteer of the Month – September 2023

This month we’d like to recognize Andrea and Jon Patrick as our September volunteer(s) of the month. If you’ve had children at OMS the last several years, they have probably had a great experience involving some of the committees and other programs that Andrea and Jon have been a part of.

From being a veteran of the PTA Executive Committee, to chairing the 5th grade committee, chess club and many others, Andrea and Jon have seemingly had their hands in just about everything. You can usually find them on the first day of school helping to direct kids where to go or jumping at any opportunity to help throughout the year.

Their dedication to our school community is truly commendable, and we are grateful for their contributions.

How did you decide to volunteer with the PTA?

The kids! At first, it was just a great way to see how our own children spent their time at OMS and who they interacted with. Over the years, it has grown into much more! Whether it’s seeing a smile on faces for picture day, helping someone find where they need to go on the first day of school, helping to understand a chess move, or find a book in the LMC, we both love interacting with the kids in a positive and engaging manner.

What has been the best part about volunteering?

Interacting with the kids and getting to know them has been the most rewarding part of volunteering. We see kids year after year, learning and growing into little humans – it’s a very rewarding opportunity to get to know each and every child and see their potential.

What has the time commitment been for you?

A great benefit of volunteering at OMS is that there is something for everyone! You can spend a lot of time or just a little, showing up and being there for the kids. Whether it’s a one-time annual event or a recurring opportunity, the commitment that you make to the PTA is up to you and your schedule. Not only do the kids appreciate it, but the staff and parents do as well. And the more time we spend at school, the more opportunities we get to make a tangible impact.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering at OMS?

If you are not sure what is right for you or your schedule, try out a few different things each year. Change it up and don’t forget to have fun with it! We are literally here for the kids and making a difference in their programming and outcome is one of the most rewarding benefits.

If you, or someone you know, would like more information on volunteering at Olive Mary-Stitt, please contact us here and we will answer any questions you have. The positive benefits to both the volunteers and the students are enhanced by the programs we organize every year.
