Excess Funds Suggestions?

Each year, PTA collects suggestions from the parent, teacher and school administration on how to spend any excess funds. Although we try to budget accordingly, this year we have had very successful PTA fundraisers and anticipate we will have extra money to spend. The actual amount of excess funds available will not be known until the end of June, and any chosen suggestions will be incorporated into the 2018-2019 PTA Budget.

When possible, links to websites, quotes, etc., should provide the exact amount your suggestion costs and where we would purchase it. An Excess Funds committee led by the PTA treasurer will evaluate the suggestions and vote on which ones to move forward, which will be presented at the PTA meeting on May 9th. OMS Parents Rocked the Decades and Trivia

Thank you to the nearly 140 parents who attended our Inaugural Olive Mary-Stitt Trivia Night! We truly appreciate you helping us bring this event to life and making it such a great success. Congratulations to Team Groupies for winning the Trivia Night Trophy. The Rock The Decades fashion for the evening was fantastic! Congratulations to Team 3’s Company, but 8 is Enough for winning Best Theme Table! Congratulations to all our Door Prize Winners!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers and judges, our amazing emcee, and to all our Door Prize Donors. We could not have done it without all your hard work and generosity.

Cultural Arts In-School Performance – Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great

On Tuesday March 13, students enjoyed a lively performance by ArtsPower National Touring Theatre: Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, adapted from the novel by Judy Blume. This musical transported students along with ten year-old Sheila on her summer vacation in the country, where through meeting new friends and facing old fears (like spiders, dogs, swimming, and big sisters), she learned to be more honest with herself and others, finding confidence and self-acceptance.

Be sure to ask your kids how they enjoyed the show! The Cultural Arts Committee is pleased to coordinate music, drama, and dance performances each year, through your continued support of the PTA.

PTA Meeting on Tuesday, April 10

We will have a light PTA business review followed by guest speaker District 25 Superintendent Dr. Lori Bein. Dr. Bein’s talk with focus on a heavy and topical issue that most of us have top of mind: school safety.

Forget about Cooking on Monday 3/12!

The Owl Way is at it again, helping others with an ALL day Eat-to-Benefit at Garbaldi’s.

Every March, The Owl Way extents a loving wing to support Pencils of Promise. Pencils of Promise, also known as PoP for short, is a non-profit organization that builds schools and increases educational opportunities in the developing world. They believe every child should have equal access to education with a goal of increasing literacy rates.

Last year we were able to raise enough money to educate eight students for a year. Let’s come together and help more children around the world have access to an education.

Stop by Garbaldi’s from 10am to 10 pm on Monday, March 12th and mention “Olive fundraiser”. Twenty percent of your purchase will go to Pencils of Promise. FYI – they deliver too!

World of Work Was a Success!

OMS fifth graders went to work on Friday, March 2nd with our new Olive World of Work program. We had interns learn about journalism, marketing, acting, designing and running library to name a few.

In all we had twenty two local business host this amazing learning experience for our students. Everything ran smoothly considering we had three buses, three bus routes and seven bus stops. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to all 30 chaperones who helped make this day possible!

Box Tops Results Are In!!

The Box Tops have been collected, clipped and counted….Olive-Mary Stitt collected just over 3,200 Box Tops! That’s $320 for our school! Amazing job everyone!

The winning homerooms are Mrs. Vittore’s 1-2 with 329 Box Tops turned in and Mrs. Grimm’s 4-4 with 413 Box Tops turned in!

This school year we have made about $650 for Olive…just by cutting a label off of products that we use everyday…SOOOO EASY!

Please continue clipping and saving, and even recruit your family, friends and neighbors to clip too. We have 8 months til our next challenge so start saving today. I think we can double what we made this year…if anyone can, Olive-Mary Stitt can!

Greetings 5th grade parents! Now that we have most of your baby pictures, it is time to begin sending in candid photos of your 5th grader throughout their years at OMS!

Please send any pictures you may have of your kids enjoying OMS activities (class parties, field trips, activity nights, etc) beginning from kindergarten until now.

If possible, we would greatly appreciate if you could please include the names of all OMS 5th graders pictured in the photos, as this will help us ensure that all of our 5th graders are well represented.

Save the Date Earth Fair 2018

Earth Fair is on Wednesday, April 18th from 6:30-8 pm in the OMS Commons. We are collecting clean bottle caps for this years art project. Also, we will need earth-conscience, fun-loving OMS students, parents and OMS alumni to assist with the many games and activities we have planned that night.

Watch for a Sign Up Genius to come out soon. We had hoped to have it ready today but we are still busy adding to it.

Finally, there will be many area vendors at the Earth Fair this year. If you have an environmentally-friendly or wellness lifestyle related business and would like to have a table at the event, please contact Megan Hill or Regan Sonnabend by March 9th.

4th and 5th Grade Activity Night – Friday, February 23rd

The PTA’s 4th & 5th Grade Activity Night is coming up soon on Friday, February 23rd.

It will be held in the OMS Commons. The doors will open at 6:45 and the show will start promptly at 7 and end by 8 PM. This event is free to all OMS 4th & 5th grade students.

Unfortunately, due to size limitations, siblings in other grades are not permitted. Students should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Volunteers Needed to Make World of Work Day a Success!

“World of Work” comes to Olive-Mary Stitt Friday, March 2, 2018. The purpose of “World of Work” program is to provide the 5th grade students an opportunity for a “real world” work experience.

This program must have enough chaperones to take flight.

This program would allow the 5th grade students to see the value hard work in different business settings. We will partner with local businesses and companies for the children to job shadow a few hours, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM is our approximate window. Examples: Berry-yo, AH Memorial Library, Sweet T’s, AH public works, Runner’s High n’ Tri, A La Mode.

Are you a local business owner? Would you like your business to participate? Does your company participate in student learning programs? Additional space will be provided by Arlington Heights Library.

On May 6, 2018, the Illinois PTA will be hosting the 5th annual SPOTLIGHT event, where they will recognize students for their contributions to the Arts and their community. We will celebrate those students with artwork that advanced to the State level of the Reflections Program, our scholarship winners and our


There is no doubt that the students in our communities are volunteering and making a difference! The Outstanding Youth Service Leaders Award provides an opportunity to recognize them for their selfless contributions. But we need to know who they are.

Submit Your Nominees by February 15, 2018

The Outstanding Youth Service Leaders awards will be presented at the Illinois PTA SPOTLIGHT, a children’s celebration of art and community event. The selected student(s) will be celebrated during the recognition ceremony. Each winner will be presented with a plaque by the Illinois PTA State President or his appointed representative. A.C.E. It 25

Last week the District 25 PTA Council approved a new committee called “A.C.E. it 25” (All Children Excel). The committee will focus on supporting children with special needs and their families. Goals of the committee are to promote disability awareness, facilitate inclusion at PTA functions and create a parent support network.

The PTA general membership voted on Maribeth Cassidy as our liaison. Please reach out to her with any questions.


Last Call for 5th Graders’ Baby Photos!!!

Attention 5th grade parents! If you have not yet sent in a baby picture of your 5th grader, please do so as soon as possible, and no later than Friday, February 9.

We’ve received pictures for about half of the 5th grade class, so we still need many more to complete our slide show!

February Box Top Challenge

It’s February so you know what that means….

It’s time for our 2nd Box Tops for Education Class Challenge this year! The challenge will run from February 12th thru February 16th.

Each box top turned in means 10¢ for our school. I know that doesn’t seem like a lot but they add up fast! In October we earned $325!

Please send in all non-expired, trimmed box tops, with your child, to school anytime during that week. There will be a bag in each room for collection. The top class in K-2 and 3-5 will get to choose a prize. Any questions – please contact Gina Groberski.

5th Grade Pennants & Banner

5th Grade Parents – the next time you are at Olive, be sure to check out the pennants and 5th Grade banner that are now hanging in the Commons. Each 5th grader has their own pennant. It is a special way to recognize them as they start their last few months at OMS.

A huge thank you to Heather Fiore and 5th Grade Committee for all of your efforts to make the pennants and banner and get them hung in the Commons.

2nd & 3rd Grade Activity Night – Coming at You on Thursday, February 1!

The PTA’s 2nd & 3rd Grade Activity Night is just a few days away on Thursday, February 1. It will be held in the OMS Commons. The doors will open at 6:45pm, with the show starting promptly at 7pm and ending by 8pm.

This event is free to all OMS second and third grade students. Unfortunately, due to size limitations, siblings in other grades are not permitted. Students should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Our middle-grades will be entertained by the Super U Challenge, a game-show like event that encourages respecting others and making good choices. We’ve been told that slime is also involved! Check out their website for more details on the show: http://superuchallenge.com/school_assembly_show/.

PTA Scholarships Available

The Arlington Heights Council of PTAs has created THREE different scholarships that provide opportunities for students in elementary and middle grades as well as graduating seniors. Below are the links for each of the scholarship applications. Please note, all applications are due on or before February 18, 2018 at 11:59 PM. Questions regarding the application process can be directed to Donna Ekl and Nicole Barbieri at sd25scholarship@gmail.com.

One of the new scholarships is for elementary aged students (grades K-7).! Pass on the other links to friends with graduating seniors who attended a district 25 school for at least 3 years.
